Objective of scan
We assess the leg veins from groin to ankle for abnormal flow (reflux/incompetence).
The study is normally separated into two pathologies venous thrombosis (blood clot) or venous insufficiency / incompetence (valvular failure).
Reasons for this scan may include:
- Varicose Veins.
- Skin colour changes, Venous Eczema, hyperpigmentation
- Recurrent swelling.
- Venous ulcers.
- Pain and oedema of the leg.
- Pain and feeling of heaviness in the leg.

Preparation for the scan
There is no real preparation when coming to have an vein duplex ultrasound examination. Please try to wear loose clothing and also be prepared to remove the clothing for a full arterial examination.
Please bring along any information / medical notes / reports which are in relation to an vein duplex ultrasound examination as they may provide useful information for the scan.
