What is the objective of this scan?

The aim of this ultrasound examination is to assess the kidneys, ureter and bladder and if you are male the prostate is assessed for size.

 

Reasons for this scan may include:

This scan is performed for a wide range of reasons some of which include: 

  • Lower urinary tract symptoms

  • Pain and or discomfort

  • Abnormal kidney functions tests 

  • Assess for abnormal structural changes e.g growths

  • Kidney Stones

  • Water Retention

  • Weak Bladder (Urinary Incontinence)

  • Inflammation

  • Cysts

  • Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)

  • High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)

  • High PSA (male)

  • Pelvis pain

  • Renal /kidney pain 

  • Severe renal infection

  • Blood in urine (haematuria)

What is included with this ultrasound scan?

An electronic ultrasound report of the examination including any measurements same day as your appointment.

What does the scan involve?

During the scan you will be asked to uncover your abdominal area and jelly will be placed over your skin. An ultrasound probe will then be placed on your skin and moved along your abdomen. An image will appear on the monitor which will be translated by a professionally qualified Ultrasonographer. The examination lasts around 10-15 minutes and is pain free. At the end of the examination the Ultrasonographer will give you a verbal report with a formal ultrasound scan report with any recommendations being sent to you which you can take to your regular healthcare professional.

Preparation for the scan

  • A full bladder is required for this scan – Please drink 1 litre of fluid approximately 1 hours before your appointment and please do your best not to empty your bladder before the examination.

  • You can eat as normal.

  • You may also continue to take any normal medication you are currently on.
