ULTRASOUND

What is an ultrasound?

An ultrasound scan is an imaging technique that allows the professionally qualified ultrasonographer to painlessly assess the insides of your body by using high frequency sound waves. These sound waves are used to create a live image by ‘bouncing’ the waves off the various tissues within your body.

Unlike other imaging techniques such CT, ultrasound does not involve radiation and is in real time i.e. live imaging and is not static i.e. still pictures. This live image is interpreted and used to provide a diagnostic report of the findings.

Ultrasound scans are performed on many different areas of the body for a wide range of reasons in healthcare and are ultimately beneficial to us if used in the right context by a competent qualified professional.  As with any test, ultrasound scans have limitations some of which are generic to all scans such as not being able to visualise bone clearly or scan specific and therefore may not be suitable in certain situations and like any test cannot diagnose every problem.
